granola, honey & yogurt

this weekend, i made this AMAZING granola (thanks katie did!) and combined it with my current go-to: greek yogurt and honey. just loving it. any fun recipes you tried out this weekend? here's my modification of katie's recipe for granola:

5 cups old fashioned rolled oats

2 cups wheat germ

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup coconut

1 cup sliced almonds

4T vanilla

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup honey 

1/2 cup oil (olive oil or another!)

mix dry ingredients; mix wet ingredients; combine two mixtures well; bake at 250 degrees for 1-2 hours (until dry and light brown), stirring every 30ish minutes; enjoy!

spring pea soup.

i LOVE alice water's the art of simple food. when i was looking for a good spring soup to make ahead so i had something other than turkey sandwiches for lunch last week, i stumbled upon this recipe. so ridiculously simple and so, so good with a french baguette and brie.

as i thought they might, pancakes were big part of our saturday morning. i'm a bisquick girl from way back, by my sweet friend sent us this trader joe's mix she loves and we had to try it. oh. my. goodness.

go-to gift

i love getting/giving flowers (especially tulips) as much as the next girl, but sometimes you just wish you could show up with some homemade chocolate chip cookies. and when you're too far away, it's hard to beat sending some of uncle chip's cookies. perhaps even better than the cookies are the witty cards they come with. my favorite? "cookies are good. steak is good. corn dogs are good. but, you are fabulous! have a cookie." runner-up? "you don't live with your parents any more! have a cookie."

red velvet donuts?!

valentine's morning, we were with dear friends in athens, georgia. and like the amazing hosts they are, they took us to the best bakery around, a completely precious place called "ike & jane." if you are remotely close to athens, you really must go. best donuts of our lives -- and the red velvet ones are worthy of seconds. amazing latte too, and how cute is this mug? (which i bought as a souvenir of this perfect morning!) 

even better than donuts? spending time with a dear friend.

not birthday cakes

this is my new love. making cakes for people for not their birthday. at first i called this "no reason cakes", but that isn't accurate, i always have a reason, it just not may be a reason other people make cakes. just so you don't think i'm betty crocker, i'm actually stealing her recipe-- both of these are box cakes. and why re-invent the wheel? especially on a work night when i'm just hoping the cake cools in time to ice it! above is the red velvet cake i made friday night for one of our great friends, below is one i made a couple of weeks into marriage. both are for milestones in flight school, which are big things for us right now. very cake worthy.
