tumbleweed tiny house company.

could you live in a house that was 89 square feet? well, jay shafer has been for over a decade and you can purchase one of his tiny houses (they range from one bedrooms at 65 square feet to three bedrooms at 854 square feet) and most of them are literally on wheels. you can also puchase the plans and build one yourself for as little as $10,000. i spent an inordinate amount of time on his website. i love the idea to "live simply so others can simply live" (it was my motto as i was unpacking us!) and this is just pretty incredible. what do you think?

p.s. you can try it out by renting this one in new hampshire. p.s.s. can you imagine how easy it would be to clean the house?!

bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils.

"Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address. On the other hand, this not knowing has its charms." - Meg Ryan in "You've Got Mail"

I love, love, love this quote and since many of you are heading back to school/sending kids back to school, I wanted to "send" you a bouquet! xo

happy anniversary!

thirty one years ago today, my parents were married. i'm grateful for that on a lot of levels, but most of all, i'm grateful for getting to be a part of and learn from their marriage for the past twenty seven years. i've learned so much from watching their love for one another and the deep impact that has had on my brother, me, and now ryan & my marriage. they are even more in love today than they are in this adorable photo. and, they meet for lunch. here's to the next 31 years!

a small favor.

dear readers, i have a small favor to ask of you:

i do this blog because of each of you. because i've been blessed with some wonderful things in my life and am trying to strike this balance between marriage, career, family and friends all over the place, and squeezing in some creativity and good meals -- and i love sharing it. t&f has been the little engine that could, slowly growing readers (in all 50 states and 58 countries!). i wish you could see how excited i get to hear from you or know a post gave you an idea of a meal for your family, a gift for a dear friend or a place you'd love to pack your bags and visit.

so, this is all a long way of saying, i know there are others out there who would love to swing by tulips & flight suits and funny enough, it seems like facebook is one of the best ways to reach new readers. so, if you love t&f and have a favorite post or just want to link to the main page, will you use your facebook status to spread the word? here are some of my favorite posts of all time you might link to: our snow day road tripsome thoughts on visiting friends, an amazing military homecoming storyour newlywed mini date night, some details from our house, our wedding programs, and my all the time favorite things.

in exchange, i promise an exciting month of posts ahead!

you guys are the best. xo, mary

quiet night.

last night, ryan had to fly. so, i had a quiet night, just me for the first time in a while. i watched an old movie, had some wine (& twizzlers) and just relaxed. (this has been a theme this week!) what's your dream quiet night? and don't you just love old movies? (i'm working my way through AFI's lists) p.s. check out this great post on a night all to oneself.
