tried & true gifts this christmas.

I don't know about you, but this Christmas, I'm loving getting loved ones things I know they'll love -- one bit practical, two bits tried & true, three bits of a little something luxurious they might not buy for themselves. Here are some things on my wish list and my giving list:

1. a good teapot & this amazing tea. I was given this last Christmas -- it quickly rose to be one of my all time favs.

2. if the men in your life are anything like the ones in mine, you can't go wrong with chocolate. this rustic cookbook looks pretty perfect to me.

3. in lo-ve with this pink jewelry case -- perfect for the jetsetting lady in your life.

4. for the little ones you know, one of my all time favorite books.

5. nothing says winter like a solid set of flannel sheets. for newlyweds you know, or the host with the most, you can't go wrong with these.

6. there's nothing better than this kiehl's lotion, this is at the top of my list!

happy giving! xo

Gift for Guys

Sorry for the infrequent posts guys, but Mary has been down for the count for much of the past week. She has tried to get a couple posts up when she gets some energy, but is running on low right now. So I thought I'd finally make my blogging debut and help out a little. Very intimidating stepping into such big shoes, but I'll do my best...

I'm starting with something I always hear complaints about, "its impossible to shop for guys! I never know what to get them." Well it probably doesn't help that most of the time when you ask a guy what he wants, he says "I don't know." I'm guilty of it myself. Its not that we don't ever want anything, its more that when we think of it, we probably mention it right then and there. And as quickly as it comes to us, it goes. My tip for you--if a guy ever mentions he wants something: write it down, text it to yourself blackberry an email to your computer, or just write it on your hand. At some point you'll need to get him something and if you've been paying attention you'll have a small list somewhere you can go back to. Best of all, he'll be totally surprised (because we forget we mention them) and you come out the hero for getting such awesome gifts. For those of you who need a more immediate answer, here are a couple thoughts:

Some swanky shaving gear from The Art of Shaving: a spiffy handle for the razor he loves (uses the blades he has and doesnt require too much change, because not all guys love change-- insert Mary eye roll here), or a really cool old school shaving cream brush, and plent of other great stuff a guy would love on the site too. Some of it can be pricey, so it's ok to wait for big holidays or go in on it with a couple people. We don't like shaving so making it a bit more exciting or fancy can shake things up.

I think gift cards can get a bad wrap. Maybe its not cool to give them to female population, but for the other half, who is lucky when they know where their keys are, let alone be able to tell you on the spot what they want for a holiday, gift cards can be a great option. For our wedding I told all my buddies that I wanted Lowe's gift cards. That way I could buy the tools I wanted when I needed them. It's hands down the coolest store, especially when you're moving into a new home, they have everything! Great military discount too. Starbucks gift cards are nice. We all know we can't break our addictions, so having one or two drinks treated by you is truly wonderful.

Another gift that gets a bad reputation is getting someone a tie. I love ties! Too much really, because in my job I dont get to wear them. And when I do get to wear one for work, its black...(uniform) But when I do get an occasion to where a tie, most of my favorite ties come from the following places: Vineyard Vines - their ties can be financially restrictive, so I try to buy mine on base or at the holidays when they are much more reasonable. The reason I love them is because they are just great looking ties, they come in lots of colors, and you can find one for just about anyone because the designs are so numerous you can find one for any hobby, sports team, or passion out there (see some above). Polo and Brooks Brothers are some of my favorite simply because they are a classic look. Not as bright and flashy, but very sharp looking. I'm not a big paisley guy, even though they appear to to be trying at a comeback, but stripes and other more traditional patterns work in just about any situation.

I think I've rambled on long enough, especially for my first post. I'll try to come back again with other ideas if you're interested. Let me know what you think, and if you have any great "gifts for guys" that I haven't mentioned leave them in the message window or shoot an email. Flightsuit out.

t&f gives back.

i have the honor of working at an amazing nonprofit called the mission continues. our goal is to ensure every veteran returning from iraq & afghanistan has an opportunity to serve again. we do fellowships for wounded veterans to help them find their purpose here at home. over 2.2 million men and women have served in iraq and afghanistan -- over 50,000 have been physically wounded and hundreds of thousands more have sustained serious mental health injuries -- including post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. these are AMAZING men and women, who have an incrdedible ethic of service, and so much left to give.

much or our reaction to wounded veterans labels them clearly as charity cases -- out of a good place, we want to give them baseball tickets, or passes to disney world, but those are temporary acts of gratitude that go away -- our work tells us the lasting gift is to offer them a chance to serve again. as one veteran told us, "we're not charity cases, we're an American asset." these veterans understand the needs in their community and have the skills to serve again -- they want to mentor at risk youth, be on call for disaster relief, build homes with habitat for humanity, train guide dogs for other disabled Americans -- and when they have a chance to serve again, the veterans have better, stronger transitions home. if you want to see what this looks like in the life of one veteran and be totally inspired, take two minutes and watch this video on our Fellow, Anthony Smith.

this christmas, as you consider giving, i'd be so honored if you considered making a donation to the mission continues. to make it a little more fun, we're doing a little campaign called tulips & flightsuits give back so we can track how this little blog makes an impact in the lives of this generation of veterans! all you have to do is go here, scroll to the bottom, and click make a donation! there's also info on how to mail a check. as you know, i don't have ads on t&f and do this because i love it (almost 500 posts this year!) -- if you've loved swinging by here, it would mean so much if you made a donation to the mission continues.

on a personal note, i love leading strategy for the mission continues because i'm passionate about this cause, but like a lot of you, this hits really close to home. my husband is active duty military -- this generation of veterans is not an abstract concept, they eat dinner at my table, stood by us on our wedding day & i am motivated every day in large part, because God forbid something were to happen to ryan and he came home wounded, i don't want someone to hand him tickets to a football game, i want people to ask him to serve again. flying helicopters isn't all he has to give this great country.

you guys are the best. xo

p.s. how cute is this new logo my friend designed?! (she's a navy wife too!!)

gifting.

christmas is coming in a hurry and if you're still on the search for the perfect gifts, i'm here to help! really, i think in some ways you could look no further than terrain (the image above screams gift guide for my dad!).

and if your name is ryan & you've been married one year, one month and some change to a blonde who really loves being organized and watching movies with you, you might want to check out this winter candle, this wire tree topper, this vintage grape crate, this heirloom seed collection, and this throw. (maybe you guys know someone who'd love one of these too!)

bonus: free shipping on orders over $50 until christmas. best question: how are you going to spend less than $50?! :)
