failure dinner.

the other night, I was so excited to make dinner. On the menu: steamed artichokes (my rookie attempt!), baked chicken with lemons, and good old chocolate chip cookies (off the recipe on the bag!)

All. Three. Failed.

homemade life.

the best description of this book is on the back flap, "in a homemade life, stories and recipes from my kitchen table, molly wizenberg describes a life with the kitchen at the center." more than that, it's a story of coming to better understand your father through the grief of losing him to cancer, finding the one you'll spend the rest of your life with over shared meals and just an incredibly well written memoir. it's a new favorite of mine-- and the recipes are fabulous -- especially jimmy's pink cookies on pages 132-133! happy reading.

for the j. crew lovers out there!

for those of you out there like me -- who have a hard time figuring out what you don't LOVE in the j. crew catalog -- you may be a fan of "jenna's picks." well, their creative director, jenna, sat down with lucky magazine for this interview. i love that her three year old picks out her shoes every day!

granola, honey & yogurt

this weekend, i made this AMAZING granola (thanks katie did!) and combined it with my current go-to: greek yogurt and honey. just loving it. any fun recipes you tried out this weekend? here's my modification of katie's recipe for granola:

5 cups old fashioned rolled oats
2 cups wheat germ
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup coconut
1 cup sliced almonds
4T vanilla
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup oil (olive oil or another!)
mix dry ingredients; mix wet ingredients; combine two mixtures well; bake at 250 degrees for 1-2 hours (until dry and light brown), stirring every 30ish minutes; enjoy!

married tax refund splurges.

my sweet husband finished up our first married taxes and it turns out marriage and combining our incomes was a fabulous thing! most exciting is it means we can get two pretty important splurges:

first, an awesome dyson vacuum because i have terrible allergies and we own no rugs yet, so we have to vacuum a lot. secondly, a truly incredible briggs and riley carry-on suitcase because i travel every other week and after a great tutorial in an atlanta luggage shop (on a seven hour delay), i think this bag will change my life.

got any plans for your tax refund? (don't worry mom, we're saving the rest)

friday night double feature.

ryan & i have no standards when it comes to what movies we see in the theaters. as long as it is half way entertaining and the preview has lines we repeat, we're probably going to the theater to see it. i have seen more movies in the time i've dated/been engaged/married to ryan than i have in the rest of my life combined, and i love it. aside from airplanes, it's the last place on earth where we can really disconnect.

70's hockey night.

the handsome guy in the psychedelic shirt on the right is my husband. and this, is his squadron's ice "soccer" game at the pensacola flyers hockey game last saturday night. click through for video of the goal he scored, honestly one of the funniest (most awesome) things i've ever seen! i love how a 6'5 guy "runs" on the ice. so, so proud.
